I-5 HOV project pile driving work nears completion

FIFE - Motorists and residents in Fife may notice additional daytime construction noise next week as crews work to finish pile driving operations on the I-5 HOV project.

Pile driving is 90 percent complete, and will allow construction of new, wider bridges. WSDOT and contractor Tri-State Construction, Inc. will drive 17 piles on the right shoulder of the southbound I-5 at the West Hylebos Creek Bridge. Crews estimate the work will take seven days to finish.

Traffic was shifted into the median last month, providing crews room on the shoulders to set temporary barrier and safely access areas to drive piles without closing highway lanes. The work may be a visual distraction for motorists.

Pile driving is scheduled 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily Monday, June 14 through Friday, June 18.

Widening the freeway for HOV lanes means building bridges over three creeks that flow under the roadway. The steel piles form the foundation for the bridge crossing the creeks.

The project adds carpool lanes on northbound and southbound I-5 from the King County line to the Port of Tacoma Road interchange in Fife, about three miles in each direction. Construction began in August 2009 and is scheduled for completion in late 2011.
